LIVE REVIEW: Septembre, Death Sex Symbol, The Chrevrolets
22nd April 2005 – West End Centre (Aldershot)
“A night of atmospheric rock” was what it said on the poster. You could probably be forgiven, therefore, for not expecting The Chevrolets: thrashy 90-second noise-punk blasts, as subtle as a kick in the teeth, but with enough youthful energy to make it a rather enjoyable kick.
Death Sex Symbol on the other hand could do with a bit of that energy. They pull all the right goth-rock moves, glaring and pouting at the front-row faithful, but it somehow feels more like a Wednesday morning in a rehearsal room than a Saturday night on stage.
It’s a good thing then that at least Septembre know what this “putting on a show” malarkey is all about. With his trademark flowers and fairylights round the mic stand, frontman Terry Abbot swaps effortlessly between synth and guitar, whispering and screaming. With a few more monstrous rockers like “What Goes Up”, he’ll soon be screaming in venues much larger than this.
